NASHVILLE, TN – We’ve all been there: You’re trying to enjoy a relaxing day, when suddenly your phone buzzes with a message from an unknown number. The text itself may be clunky and difficult to understand, but the worst part is that — even if you tell it to stop — they keep coming through, leaving you irritated.

Despite the convenience that bulk texting software has granted customers and businesses alike, others have gotten their hands on this technology to target vulnerable recipients using spam texts.

Fortunately, there are some methods you can follow to put a stop to them for good.

Be Wary About Sharing Your Number

Social media makes it tempting to share lots of personal information, but your phone number should always be kept as private as possible. Never give it to anyone unless you trust them entirely.

Don’t Reply to Texts

Even if it seems like a spam text is innocent, possibly even sent by a “good” company like non-profits, texting them back for the sake of it is never a good idea and could worsen the situation.

Respond “STOP” if You Know a Text is Legit

Sometimes, legitimate businesses mistakenly use their personalized text messaging software and come across as spammers. In this case, it’s safe to reply with “STOP” to unsubscribe from their list.

Don’t Click Links

If you wouldn’t click on a suspicious link found on the internet, it’s a good idea to take similar precautions if sent one via spam message.

Report the Spam Message to Your Carrier

Many phone carriers are aware of the dangers posed by spammers and, as such, offer resources for reporting any you receive. Doing so could prevent someone else from falling into their trap!

Report the Spam Message to the FTC

Similarly, the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) takes spam messaging very seriously, and stores reports of fraudulent bulk texts within their database.

Use a Spam-blocking App

Apps like Nomorobo and Robokiller were designed to block spam text messaging software entirely. Though you must pay for their services, their prices could be worth the peace of mind.

Filter Out Spam Messages in Your App’s Settings

Most mainstream messaging apps like iMessage contain filters that block spam texts, mainly by preventing unknown numbers from contacting you. These don’t always work perfectly, but they can be a good starting point when paired with other strategies.

Use a Secondary VoIP Number

Just like you might use a “fake” e-mail account to separate junk and marketing e-mails from your standard account, you can use a secondary, disposable VoIP number to give to companies and/or people you don’t fully trust.

Block the Number

Our final strategy Is the simplest (and most obvious): Simply block the number sending spam messages! This is generally a foolproof method that solves the issue immediately; if not, you still have plenty of other tips to try.

We Support Legitimate Texting

Stacked Messenger provides business with the personalized text messaging software they need to make an impact, from small non-profits to multinational corporations. And don’t worry — we don’t support spam texting!
